#15 Library 2.0

I liked Rick Anderson's comments titled Away From Icebergs. He makes good points about the fact that today's libraries need to adapt their organizations to fit a predominately electronic environment, instead of continuing to operate as though print was still the predominate medium. Those days are gone.

We need to stop collecting things that we think people might need, but rather collect things that we know they need, adding to our collections on demand. Anderson also said that we should stop spending so much time instructing people on how to use databases, but rather create databases that work better. I look forward to doing this to our library catalog. Some libraries are already offering federated searching and many other features within their catalogs. We need to do the same. Check out the BOSS catalog at Oklahoma State University-- pretty cool

Habit 1: Begin with the end in mind is the easiest for me. I can always envision the end result -- me knowing how to knit, or speaking a foreign language. I'm always dreaming about doing things I don't know how to do or becoming an expert on a new subject.

Habit 5: Create your own learning toolbox is the hardest for me. or it could be
Habit 2: Accept responsibility for your own learning
I do great when learning in a class setting, maybe because I thrive on the structure. But with lifelong learning I think that I usually just do one thing to accomplish a learning goal, such as take one language class or spend one month trying to knit, and then when its still hard to do, give up. So I think I need to work on adding more things to the toolbox to help me learn -- maybe in addition to classes I should add in things such as self-study tutorials, additional books, and mentors. I can see that a multi-faceted approach would accelerate success and keep the confidence going!
